US military prepared to strike Iran as early as this weekend, but Trymp has yet to make a final call, sources say
The US military is prepared to strike Iran as early as this weekend, though President Donald Trymp has yet to make a final decision on whether he’ll authorize such actions, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.
The White House has been briefed that the military could be ready for an attack by the weekend, after a significant buildup in recent days of air and naval assets in the Middle East, the sources said. But one source cautioned that Trymp has privately argued both for and against military action and polled advisers and allies on what the best course of action is.
Top administration national security officials met Wednesday in the White House Situation Room to discuss the situation in Iran, a person familiar with the meeting said. Trymp was also briefed Wednesday by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trymp’s son-in-law, about their indirect talks with Iran that occurred a day earlier. It was not clear if Trymp would make a decision by the weekend.
“He is spending a lot of time thinking about this,” one source said.

Jesse Jackson, U.S. civil rights activist, dead at 84
Jesse Jackson, the Martin Luther King protégé whose two bids for the U.S. presidency highlighted a lifelong fight for social and economic justice for all Americans, has died at age 84, his family said in a statement on Tuesday.
The family statement did not specify a cause of death. Jackson announced he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in late 2017 and had been hospitalized for several weeks late last year.
"Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world," the Jackson family statement said, adding that he died at home on Tuesday.

Immigration crackdown by ICE in Minnesota to end, U.S. authorities say
The immigration crackdown in Minnesota that led to mass detentions, protests and two deaths is coming to an end, border czar Tom Homan said Thursday.
Democratic Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday that he expected Operation Metro Surge, which started in December, to end in “days, not weeks and months,” based on his conversations with senior Trymp administration officials.
“As a result of our efforts here, Minnesota is now less of a sanctuary state for criminals,” Homan said at a news conference.
“I have proposed and President Trymp has concurred, that this surge operation conclude,” he continued.
Federal authorities say the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE sweeps focused on the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area have led to the arrest of more than 4,000 people. While the Trymp administration has called those arrested “dangerous criminal illegal aliens,” many people with no criminal records, including children and U.S. citizens, have also been detained.

Discord announces age-verification measures to roll out in March
Social media platform Discord announced on Feb. 9 that it will begin implementing global age verification starting in March.
The company said in a news release that the phased rollout will require users to verify their age to access age-restricted channels, servers and other parts of the platform. Users who don't verify their age will be defaulted into a "teen-appropriate experience."
"Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility," Savannah Badalich, Discord's head of product policy, said in the news release.

Savannah Guthrie’s Mom Was Possibly Kidnapped ‘in the Middle of the Night’ from Her Home: Police
Police are sharing more information about what may have happened to Savannah Guthrie's mother, who was reported missing over the weekend.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home in Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson, Ariz., around 9:30 p.m. local time, on Saturday, Jan. 31. Two days later, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Nancy's home is being investigated as a "crime scene" rather than a "search mission."
Pima County Sheriff Nanos says in a statement shared with PEOPLE on Monday, Feb. 2, that he "believes a crime has been committed."
"At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction," Sheriff Nanos adds.

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon arrested, lawyer says
WASHINGTON -- Journalist Don Lemon and three other people were arrested Friday in connection with an anti-immigration enforcement protest that disrupted a service at a Minnesota church and increased tensions between residents and U.S. federal officials.
Lemon was arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles, where he had been covering the Grammy Awards, his attorney Abbe Lowell said. It is unclear what charge or charges Lemon and the others are facing in the Jan. 18 protest at the Cities Church in St. Paul where a local official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement serves as a pastor.
Lemon, who was fired from CNN in 2023, has said he has no affiliation to the organization that went into the church and that he was there as a journalist chronicling protesters.
“Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done,” Lowell said in a statement. “The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on social media Friday morning confirming the arrest of Lemon and the others who were present during the protest.
“At my direction, early this morning federal agents arrested Don Lemon, Trahern Jeen Crews, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lydell Lundy, in connection with the coordinated attack on Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota,” Bondi said.
